City council has just approved a plan to “revitalize” the Byward Market. One million dollars will be spent on making over George Street Plaza including new vendor stalls, seating, a horse fountain and more. Many thought to make George a “pedestrian only” walk but that has not been approved, cars will still be allowed. There has been approved two 26 storey student apartment towers on Besserer and Rideau that will be totally car-free, marking a slow move towards a pedestrian only zone. Light rail throughout the city will also push the market to being more “pedestrian friendly” as those coming from the suburbs may not need a car to get downtown.
For now…the best way to enjoy the market is to live right in it! Like at our listing at 179 George Street….minutes from everything you could dream of. You are living in the beating heart of Ottawa by living here. Have a look to see for yourself!
