Fall is almost upon us! While I love the crispness I still desperately miss that humidity!!! I know….. strange!
Besides that cooler air, Fall also brings that need to do things around the house and yard. Remember to feel free to contact me for referrals to tried and true trades people as you start your fall projects around your home. Watch for upcoming events that we will host now that everyone is starting to get back into their routines again.
Also, feel free to contact me if you want advice on whether your renovation will give you a good return when you go to sell several years from now. I get calls all of the time asking whether it should be a bathtub or shower, an addition or an extra door etc. I take these calls as a compliment so please do not hesitate to contact me.
Watch for upcoming client/friend events: private concerts, Tasting Ottawa events, Grace in the Kitchen event and more!
Thank you again for sharing our names with others. We so appreciate it! Thank you!
Our Process: Open Houses
Okay, yes….I am always trying new things to differentiate myself from others……
In our last newsletter we promised that we would share how our listing process differs from others. This month we visit our approach to the once omnipresent Open House!
Open Houses: One of the first questions that so many people ask me when they are thinking of listing their home is “Do we have to do open houses?”
Much like looking at houses in the MLS catalogue of past generations, Open houses used to be a wonderful way for a buyer to see the interior of a home. You could see the interior of a house without going that next step of having your agent take you. They really served a purpose. But then along came the internet and an entirely NEW way and more effective way of marketing homes (plus a safer & less intrusive way).
In almost all cases I will suggest that a better option to an open house is a strong internet presence with:
1. Good photography
2. A Great video
3. Links to community information
Here is an example of how pictures and video showcase a home perfectly 4 Brookbend Crescent . People KNOW what the house is going to look like as well as the location. And we are consistent in what we do for our listings…no matter what the price of the home. We do have drone restrictions on some though because of the proximity to to an airport.
Do I do open houses? Absolutely…..if my client wants me to host one OR if there is a situation where potential buyers are going to be definitely passing by (for example if your house is by model homes of the same price range) If you have one of those houses that simply does not take a good picture or video, one that you must be in to really capture the true warmth of the home.
Most of our clientele comes from word of mouth/referrals from past clients who have been happy with our relationship. Using an open house to get new clients is not part of our process. When we do an open house it is to do what is best for the client. Many clients have concerns about security and safety…. we hear you and respect that. When you decide that an open house IS right for your property, we take extra precautions. You and your possessions are of THE utmost importance to us!

Recipe of the Month: Broccoli Cheddar Bites
The summer has been a busy month for Evans Team Ottawa. This recipe was discovered at a home concert of Carole’s where it was brought as a contribution to the potluck. It was a huge hit! A great idea to bring to any social event…any time of year. Thank you so much to Karen Krueger for this recipe!
5 cups broccoli florets
1 Tbsp salted butter, melted
6 Tbsp breadcrumbs
2 cups goat cheese or jalapeno cheddar cheese (or a sharp cheddar), grated
3 green onions, finely chopped
1/4 cup sour cream
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
Blanch broccoli in boiling salted water for 6 minutes or until fork tender. Drain and run under cold water to cool.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Brush a 24 cup mini muffin pan with melted butter; sprinkle 1 tbsp breadcrumbs evenly over the pan. Shake off any excess.
Transfer broccoli to a food processor; pulse until finely chopped but not pureed. Transfer to a bowl and mix in remaining 5 tbsp dry breadcrumbs, the cheese, green onion, sour cream, eggs, salt and pepper until well combined.
Divide broccoli mixture between the cups, bake for 20 minutes until golden and set. Cool slightly then use a thin knife to remove bites from the muffin cups. Serve warm.
